The Rustler baseball team barely defeated Los Angeles Harbor Saturday, Feb. 19 at home, by a score of 11-9. After losing the first three games of the season, the Rustlers have come back and won five out of their last six games.
Golden West came out strong and went up 11-1 very quickly, a lopsided win seamed to be in store, until the Rustlers managed to give up eight runs in the last two innings alone, allowing L.A. Harbor to come back into the game.
"We didn't play very good baseball, the closing pitchers didn't do their job and we didn't play very good defense either," said head coach Bert Villarreal.
Many errors were made in the last two innings that could have cost them the game. There were dropped balls by the outfielders, and one ball got past second basemen Cody Webber's glove, rolling into the outfield. Pitcher Garrett Overeem threw another ball in the dirt on a throw to first bringing in another two runs.
Thankfully for the Rustlers, Cameron Cox has been hitting well for the team to bring in runs. Cox hit a two run home run in the second inning to make the score 7-0.
Golden West managed to come away with a victory, stopping L.A. Harbor from rallying back and winning. "The starting pitchers have been keeping us in games, especially Race Parmenter who's been pitching lights out," Villarreal said.
The Rustlers' next game was Tuesday Feb. 22 at College of the Canyons (2-1), and will be followed by back to back games Thursday and Friday Feb. 25-26 at Golden West College against Cerro Coso College (2-4).
