Golden West College snaps Irvine Valley's three-match win streak with two first-half goals and held on for a 2-0 victory over the Lasers.
It was the Rustlers' fifth straight shutout in conference play and improved their conference-leading record to 5-0-0 overall. Golden West also improved to 7-2-1 overall.
The loss dropped Irvine Valley's record to 7-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in conference.
Golden West struck early in the match. In the eighth-minute, Max Talbert headed in a long throw in from the right side by Eric Anuiano to give the Rustlers a 1-0 lead.
Seven minutes later, IVC freshman keeper Diego Chacon made a nice diving save to keep it a 1-0 game.
But in the 30th minute, Golden West increased its lead. Omar Laris scored off a pass from David Perez to make it 2-0.
IVC's Chacon made another big save in the 37th minute, stopping a one-on-one opportunity for Golden West.
Irvine Valley looked as if it had cut the lead to one early in the second half. But a nice free kick goal (upper left corner) by sophomore forward Brandon Mulhall was disallowed after the referee ruled that an IVC player had distracted Golden West goalie Christian Cucue.
And in the 60th minute, IVC was forced to play with 10 players the rest of the way when IVC defender Jonathan Chavez was handed a red card.
Chacon finished with six saves for Irvine Valley, while Cucue had three saves for Golden West.
Golden West hosts hosts district rivals Orange Coast College on Friday at 3 p.m.
