Huntington Beach, Calif. – June 3, 2010 – Kyle Kopp, a two-time Olympian and former Assistant Coach for the Women’s Senior National Team has been named Head Coach of the Women’s Youth National Team. Kopp, who assisted the Women’s Senior National Team to consecutive Olympic Medals in 2004 and 2008 is also the Head Coach of Women’s Water Polo and Swimming at Golden West College. He takes over the Youth National Team from longtime coach Chris Oeding as the squad prepares for the first ever Youth World Championships in 2012.

Kopp will also serve as an ODP Coaches Education Consultant with the primary purpose of creating and implementing a Coaches Education Program in collaboration with ODP and National Team staffs. The Coaches Education Program will include a development system for ODP and Elite Coaches and progressive and systematic standards for USAWP coaches.

“Kyle will play an instrumental role in the development of not only the athletes in the women’s program but also the development of ODP and USAWP coaches,” said Guy Baker, Director of Olympic Development for USA Water Polo. “Kyle is an excellent teacher, the best I have ever worked with. Kyle was a key and critical contributor to the international success of the 2001-08 Women’s Senior and Junior National Teams. It has been a goal to get our best teachers with our youngest National Teams to start them in the right direction. The hiring of Kyle will further connect ODP to the National Teams Pipeline and with the inaugural Youth World Championships in 2012 there is now more focus on the Youth National Team.”

Kopp is a 1990 graduate of Long Beach State and was a player for the Men’s National Team for over 10 years that saw appearances at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games in Atlanta and Sydney respectively. Following his playing career Kopp transitioned into coaching joining the staff of the Women’s Senior National Team where he contributed to two World Championship titles and two Olympic Medals in 2004 and 2008 in Athens and Beijing respectively. In only his second year, Kopp led the Golden West Women’s Water Polo Team to the California State Championship in 2009.

“The Women’s National Teams have a tradition of success that I was fortunate to be a part of,” said Kopp. “I am excited to be back and coaching the Women’s Youth National Team which now includes the opportunity to represent the United States in a World Championship. I truly believe that fundamentals are the foundation and cornerstone of building a successful program. It is an honor to coach the youth team as they embark on this journey and take the first step in this development process.”

Alison Gregorka and Paul Felton have been named as Assistant Coaches for the Youth National Team. Gregorka was a member of the Women’s Senior National Team 2006-09, winning a silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games and two World Championship titles in 2007 and 2009. Gregorka was also the ODP Southern Pacific Zone Girls 1994 and under Assistant Coach. Felton was the Head Coach of the ODP Pacific Zone Girls 1992 and under Team. Felton was named Top Girls Coach for the Northern California Region. Both coaches will also remain ODP Coaches.

“As we are wrapping up the second phase of ODP, preparing for the third phase of ODP and a full summer of National Teams training and competition, we are going to begin the process of creating a Coaches Education Program,” said Baker. “Having a standardized and progressive Coaches Education Program is one of the most important components of developing our sport. With Kyle’s background, expertise, and vision it now seems possible to move from the idea stage to the creation stage. It is going to be a tremendous amount of work, but everyone that will be involved loves a challenge.”

The Women’s Youth National Team will begin their preparation for the 2012 Youth World Championships with the National Training and Selection Camp (NTSC) June 28-July 1. Seventy ODP athletes were selected from the ODP Regional Championships. In addition, the NTSC will focus on the development of coaches with the Phase 3 eighth and ninth grade coaches in attendance. The ODP Coaches will be fully interacted in the NTSC which includes technical and tactical training, tactical meetings and physical assessments.

Two Golden West College Athletes are awarded
Orange Empire Conference Character Champion Award

The OEC Character Champion Award is given annually to the Orange Empire Conference male and female student-athlete that exhibits high character traits of sportsmanship, respect, caring, fairness, civility, honesty, integrity, and responsibility. Two athletes from Golden West College were among the finalist to earn this prestigious award. Lauren Lingle (Women’s Water Polo and Swimming), and Alex Bayus (Baseball) were the two individuals who were nominated by the college.

Lauren Lingle (Women’s Water Polo and Swim)
During Lauren Lingle’s time at Golden West College she has revealed herself to be a confident, capable, intelligent and industrious student-athlete. She successfully took the fundamentals of our program and not only applied them in the water, but in the classroom. By excelling and working hard every day she became the team’s leader, respected by all of her teammates and peers. She perfectly works to do what is best for her team by sacrificing her time to take care of a teammate, being a fair judge to solve a problem between teammates, being honest about her personal abilities which will benefit the team’s success, at the end of an eight hour bus trip being the last one off the bus to ensure it is more clean than when we first boarded, showing sportsmanship to an opponent of another team after just beating them during the semi-final game of State Championships. Lauren’s positive attitude every day, regardless of how she feels physically motivates those around her to do their best, including the staff she encounters on a daily basis. Through all of her dedication to Golden West College, she has been accepted to attend California State University, Long Beach to continue her athletic and academic endeavors.

Alex Bayus (Baseball)
A.J. is the current home run leader in the Orange Empire Conference and was selected to the OEC Second Team as a freshman. He is a true leader on and off the field by the way he carries himself. He will graduate from Golden West with and AA and a 3.5 GPA. A.J. has accepted a scholarship to Biola University and is currently being pursued by a number of DI schools. As a graduate of Servite high in Anaheim, A.J. spent a lot of time working youth camps at Servite and is looking forward to a career in the military once his education and athletic career comes to end. When asked about A.J., Coach Bert Virreal remarked, “I can’t say enough about this young man it has been a great joy to have coached him.”

Golden West scored six runs in the top of the eighth inning and two more
in the top of the ninth to take a 12-6 lead and then withstood an Irvine
Valley rally in the bottom of the ninth to win, 12-10, in an Orange
Empire Conference game on Saturday at Irvine Valley.

Brent Tani was 4 for 6 with three runs scored and three RBI, A.J. Bayus
went 4 for 5 with a double and four RBI, Mario Gordon went 1 for 4 with
two RBI and John Baccari was 1 for 4 with three runs and one RBI in the
win for the Rustlers.

Robert Welsh earned the win in relief to improve his record to 4-2
overall. Welsh pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on
three hits with two walks, one hit batter and four strikeouts.
Irvine Valley’s Aaron Lear-Weber took the loss. He gave up three runs on
a hit and two walks in just 1/3 of an inning. Lear-Weber followed
starter Cody Fitzgerald, who pitched well enough for IVC.

The left-handed Fitzgerald threw seven complete innings. He allowed four
runs on 10 hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Micah Gorman went 1 for 3 with three RBI, including getting two RBI on a
squeeze bunt play, for Irvine Valley. Drew Williams went 3 for 5 with
two doubles, a grand slam, three runs scored and four RBI. Williams hit
the grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning off a 1-2
fastball from Golden West reliever Bryan Raines, but it wasn’t enough
for the Lasers.

Michael Syrett was then brought in to pitch for Golden West and got
Edgar Zamora to ground out to end the game. Syrett earned his third save
of the year.

Golden West improved its record to 21-11 overall and 12-6 in conference,
while Irvine Valley fell to 10-23 overall and 2-16 in conference.

The Rustlers went into the day tied for second place in the conference
standings with Cypress – just one game back of first-place Santa Ana.

Irvine Valley plays at Golden West on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

SANTA ANA, CA – The Santa Ana College (SAC) baseball team had its eight-game Orange Empire Conference winning streak snapped following its 11-6 loss to Golden West College (GWC).

The Dons (21-8, 11-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings with two runs in the second and another in the third. Danny Recio drove in Julian Duran and Marcus Meraz for the first two before Duran drove in Chris Miller for the Dons third run of the game.

The Rustlers (17-10, 8-5) scored their first run in the fifth inning to cut the Dons lead to 3-1 before taking a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning. Billy Silvestri, Alec Rosales and Mario Gordon drove in the three runs for GWC in the sixth.

The Dons answered in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4 when Austin O’Neal drew a lead off walk and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by TJ Yasuhara.

After neither team scored in the seventh inning, RJ Hively’s first two pitches of the eighth inning each hit a batter giving the Rustlers two base runners with no outs.

After Hively was relieved by Sean Slettvet, Silvestri reached on a fielder’s choice and Rosales was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A balk was called during Clayton Prestridge’s at bat to score the go ahead run before a wild pitch scored another run putting GWC up 6-4. Prestridge capped the at bat off with a two-run home putting the Rustlers up 8-4.

The Dons answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 8-6 when Yasuhara doubled in O’Neal and Duran. However, the next five batters for SAC would be retired in order.

The Rustlers added three more runs in the ninth with the first on an A.J. Bayus solo home run before Silvestri singled in John Spirk and Jordan Tripp to cap off the scoring.

Hively (4-4) suffered the loss for the Dons as he allowed six runs on eight hits in seven innings with six strikeouts. Robert Welsh (3-2) earned the win in relief of Chris Devenski. Welsh allowed three runs on three hits over two innings.

Golden West Rustlers 9, at Riverside City College 8

RIVERSIDE – Thanks to six, count ‘em, six home runs by their opponents, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers dropped a 9-8 Orange Empire Conference decision to the Golden West College (GWC) Rustlers at the Evans Sports Complex Saturday afternoon.

Riverside (12-15, 7-6 OEC) was able to overcome the first five round-trippers and an 8-1 deficit by coming up with seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Rustlers struck one more circuit clout, this last one a solo shot down the left-field line with two outs in the top of the ninth by sophomore CF Jordan Tripp (Los Alamitos HS) – off RCC freshman RHP reliever Travis Tomsen (M.L. King, Jr., HS) – and his second dinger of the game.

Golden West (16-10, 7-5 OEC) received three solo home runs from sophomore 3B A.J. Bayus, who connected in the first, fourth and sixth innings. Also in the sixth, Tripp socked a two-run blast to center field for a 6-1 Rustler lead and then eventual winning pitcher Chris Devenski (Gahr HS) – who was playing shortstop at the time – hammered a ball over the left-field fence for the Rustlers’ third home run of the inning and a 7-1 lead.

As has been the case for nearly every home game where they have trailed late, the Tigers made something happen. Rustler sophomore LHP Robert Welsh (Coronado HS) came on in relief of GWC starter, freshman RHP Blake Cestr (Huntington Beach HS), who brought a 0-4 record into the game and left with an 8-1 lead.

RCC freshman C Michael Denucci (M.L. King, Jr., HS) singled through the left side to get the Tigers going. Freshman LF Chad Erickson (Yucaipa HS) drew a walk and then sophomore DH Wynton Bernard (Rancho Bernardo HS) hit a high chopper to the left of the mound and beat the throw to first for a base hit to load the bases. After a strikeout for the first out of the inning, freshman CF Michael Castello (Hemet HS) walked to send home Denucci. Freshman pinch-hitter Frankie Torres (Cathedral City HS) then drilled a 2-0 pitch to the gap in right-center for a two-run double as RCC cut the deficit to 8-4.

After a pitching change, Castello scored on a balk which sent Torres to third. Sophomore RF Edwin Mendoza (M.L. King, Jr., HS) then crushed a 3-2 pitch to the gap in left-center for a double to drive in Torres. An infield error put runners on the corners and the Rustlers made another pitching change in the form of freshman RHP Barry Luke (Huntington Beach HS). Freshman 3B Curtis Cassise (La Sierra HS) then drilled the first pitch down the left-field line for a two-run double – his third hit of the game – and just like that, the Tigers forged an 8-8 tie.

But in the ninth, Tripp delivered his solo shot off Tomsen (1-1) for his fourth hit and fourth RBI. Devenski (6-1), who finally retired RCC in the eighth, and in the ninth, picked up the win.

Both teams will continue OEC play Tuesday, Apr. 13, at 2 p.m. as Riverside will host the Cypress College Chargers and Golden West will visit the Santa Ana College Dons.
